The curtain fell on the 2024/25 Debmarine Namibia Premiership with an
electrifying final match between African Stars and Young African. As the season
concluded, Debmarine Namibia CEO, Mr. Willy Mertens, delivered a stirring
address celebrating not only the sporting excellence on display but the broader
impact of football on unity, opportunity, and national transformation.
The final match showcased exemplary skill and passion from both teams.
African Stars emerged as champions, claiming their third consecutive league
title and earning the right to retain the original trophy. Mr. Mertens also
applauded Young African, the season's runners-up, acknowledging their
commendable performance in what was an intensely competitive campaign, four
teams remained in title contention with just five fixtures remaining.
Both African Stars and Young African were also recognised for their past
triumphs during the two seasons Debmarine Namibia sponsored the NFA Cup prior
to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mr. Mertens highlighted Debmarine Namibia’s deep-rooted commitment to
football beyond conventional sponsorship, framing it as an investment in human
potential. “Football unites people from all walks of life. It uplifts
communities, nurtures talent, and creates lasting change.”
Since the Premiership’s inception three seasons ago, Debmarine Namibia
has contributed approximately N$50 million, bolstering league operations and
elevating standards across the board, from player remuneration to logistics.
Cumulatively, the company’s investments in Namibian football, which include
support for the Brave Warriors, Brave Gladiators, and club-level competitions,
now approach N$80 million over the past decade.
The social ripple effect has been equally significant. The league's
success has supported 877 individuals across various sectors, including medical
teams, referees, security personnel, accommodation providers and vendors, mirroring
the size of Debmarine Namibia’s own workforce.
He emphasised the importance of placing players, coaches and officials
at the heart of all football development. “It’s the 480 players and match
officials who bring this league to life. Their welfare must remain the focus.”
He also reiterated Debmarine Namibia’s stance on establishing an
independent league structure one that can attract and retain sustainable
sponsorships without undue interference.
