Women are the architects of
progress, shaping the world not just through the gift of life but through their
unwavering strength, resilience, and vision. As leaders, nurturers, and
innovators, they leave an indelible mark across industries, communities, and
homes, balancing intellect with empathy to drive meaningful change. Recognising
their invaluable role, Debmarine Namibia is committed to safeguarding the
health and well-being of pregnant women, ensuring they receive the care and
support they deserve.
Their contribution extends
beyond individual families; it plays a crucial role in population growth,
shaping societies and fostering sustainable development. The company is
redefining the narrative for women working at sea, embracing and celebrating
its female workforce. With exceptional maternity benefits and policies in
place, it is fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for women who
choose to pursue careers at sea and making life brilliant not just through
diamonds, but through the lives of the incredible women working on the vessel
and in the office.
For women working at sea,
Debmarine Namibia provides opportunities to transition into shore-based
positions for up to nine months, as required, until the birth of their child.
After birth, they are entitled to six months of leave to bond with their little
ones before rejoining the vessels. Recently, the company introduced rental
assistance for pregnant mothers while they are based in the office, recognising
that Debmarine Namibia’s female workforce comes from all 14 regions. This
seamless transition not only safeguards their careers but also reflects the
company’s deep respect for their capabilities and contributions. It is a system
designed to value the individual, not merely the job title, ensuring that the
brilliance in their lives continues to shine.
Maternity leave policies at
Debmarine Namibia are equally impressive. Shore-based employees are entitled to
up to 16 weeks (112 calendar days) of maternity leave, during which they
receive financial support. For the first three months, employees are paid 100%
of their pensionable basic salary, excluding the Social Security grant provided
by the Social Security Commission. In the fourth month, they receive 78% of
their basic salary. Moreover, fixed monthly allowances are maintained for the
entire duration of maternity leave, adding an extra layer of financial
stability.
For women working at sea, the
benefits extend even further. Seagoing employees can take up to 28 consecutive
weeks (196 calendar days) of maternity leave - a substantial period compared to
industry norms. The financial provisions mirror those for shore-based employees,
with 100% of pensionable basic salary covered for the first three months and
78% for the remaining four months. Fixed allowances, excluding the seagoing
allowance, are continued throughout the seven months, reinforcing the company’s
dedication to ensuring its employees are cared for.
“Beyond maternity benefits, we
actively work to dispel myths about the challenges of working at sea as a
woman,” says Senior Human Resource Manager, Elke Hanstein. “By creating a
supportive and progressive workplace, Debmarine Namibia is proving that women
can succeed and thrive in maritime roles, breaking the barrier of careers
previously considered only for men. Our efforts showcase that working at sea
can be both fulfilling and rewarding - a shining example of how we make life
brilliant for all our employees.”
The company’s approach also
includes flexibility for those needing extended maternity leave. Employees can
apply for accrued leave, unpaid leave, or non-accumulative leave to accommodate
additional time away, ensuring their needs are met without financial strain.
Debmarine Namibia stands as a
beacon of empowerment and inclusivity in the global maritime industry. Their
unwavering support for female employees, particularly in terms of maternity
care, underscores their commitment to making life brilliant not just through
their diamonds, but for the women who help unearth them. For women seeking
careers at sea, the company offers not just a job but a brighter, more
promising future.
