Debmarine Namibia appreciates the importance of investigating quality offsets credits that will be needed to overcome the unique challenge of the hard-to-abate marine fuel. As such, we have aligned with the De Beers Group offset strategy to ensure that such credits are of the highest quality and are anchored around local offset projects. This will ensure that there are co-benefits linked to our other Building Forever goals. The current strategy is evaluating local nature-based offset projects to assess whether they meet the stringent qualifying registration criteria. The De Beers Group-funded Kelp Blue project is an example of an offset project. Large-scale underwater giant kelp forests safely lock away vast amounts of CO₂ in the ocean forever (carbon sequestering) while also helping to sustain healthy marine ecosystems.
